Human connection: part of the meaning of life

2022: the year connection became even more important to me. AI apparently agrees! For once in our lives, this is something that for the most part, we can universally agree on.

Life over the last 3 years was challenging. All of my family lives abroad and historically, my friendship focus was abroad or out of state, which means that during much of that time, the intention I set in 2018 of seeing loved ones at least once a year was compromised.

I know I wasn't alone on this front. For some this was a welcome retreat from lots of socialization, but for others, like me, it made me seek friends who live nearby, and have a community where we could celebrate the good times, support each other on challenging days and share laughter.

Once we leave school or if we work remotely, how do we find these connections?

Most technology allows us to divide our attention between the call, what’s going around us in the physical world and even incoming notifications. I’ve been so grateful for the virtual connections online and the ability to connect with people globally I might never have met in person. But does it replace in person connection? Not for me. I appreciate the comments and interactions from all of you on content I carefully and intentionally create, however the disjointed time between one message and another divides the connection. Unless we take that spark of connection and cultivate it with attention, intention and presence over time, it remains superficial.

Two years ago, after a long weekend disconnecting from the virtual world, I felt nourished and rejuvenated. I had more insight, more connection to nature and my surroundings. I decided to focus on creating a more permanent piece of content, one that can be enjoyed when all technology is tucked away: a book. However, this didn't automatically create human connection!
